The Testing Process: 

  1. Sample Preparation: Doorset specimens are prepared and installed in to test furnace. Amend point 4 to ‘observed for modes of failure’. 

  2. Fire Exposure: The door is subjected to fire in a furnace following the UL time-temperature curve. 

  3. Positive Pressure Simulation: Unlike older standards, UL 10C requires positive pressure, ensuring hot gases push against the door, testing real-world fire conditions. 

  4. Performance Monitoring: The door is observed for flame penetration, structural integrity, and smoke leakage. 

  5. Test Duration: Fire resistance is assessed based on how long the door maintains integrity and insulation, typically rated for 20, 30, 45, 60, or 90 minutes. 

  6. Certification & Compliance: It receives positive primary test evidence (test report), which can be used to cover that specific door design, or incorporated within third party scope data.

UL 10C Testing Procedures 

Fire doors tested under UL 10C receive fire resistance ratings based on their ability to withstand fire for specified periods. The classifications are as follows: 

  • 20-Minute Fire Door: Typically used for residential or light commercial applications. 

  • 30-Minute Fire Door: Provides additional fire protection for interior applications. 

  • 45-Minute Fire Door: Used in commercial buildings, offices, and multi-family residences. 

  • 60-Minute Fire Door: Found in industrial settings, stairwells, and exit enclosures. 

  • 90-Minute Fire Door: Installed in high-risk areas such as factories and hazardous locations. 

These classifications ensure that fire doors meet the required fire protection levels based on the building’s fire safety strategy. 

Fire Resistance Ratings and Classifications 

UL 10C is often compared with other fire resistance standards, such as: 

  • EN 1634-1 (European Standard): Tests fire doors under neutral or negative pressure conditions. 

  • BS 476 Part 22 (British Standard): Assesses fire resistance under different temperature and pressure conditions. 

  • UL 10B (Older U.S. Standard): Uses neutral pressure testing, which does not reflect real fire scenarios as accurately as UL 10C. 

 

Unlike UL 10B, which does not account for positive pressure, UL 10C simulates real-world fire conditions more effectively, making it the preferred standard in North America.
