From Linlithgow to Hong Kong, Dubai and Beyond – tracing Halspan’s 25-year History

As we celebrate Halspan’s 25th-anniversary year, founder and chairman John Martin takes a moment to reflect on the company’s remarkable journey over the quarter-century.

Halspan beginnings…

John begins “In the early 1990s, amidst a rapidly changing world where airports were emerging as symbols of progress, this evolution had a huge bearing on Halspan’s expansion. Little did I know, I was setting off on a path that would shake up fire safety standards worldwide, starting with Asia and UAE. And so begins the story of Halspan, a company born from seeing and seizing opportunities, and driven by a passion for innovation and excellence.”

A simple spark!

Halspan’s journey kickstarted with a simple yet ground-breaking idea: investing in crafting fire doors that not only met safety standards but surpassed them. John explains “Pre-tested solutions were a game-changer that no one else was daring enough to tackle at the time. Seeing a gap in the market and a chance to solve a burning issue, the booming construction scene in Dubai became Halspan’s launchpad to ignite the fire safety industry.”

Adapting to change

Reflecting on our early days, John considers it’s remarkable how far we’ve come. “We did business mostly face-to-face, there was no Facebook,- we phoned, we met! Then computers were obnoxiously big with whizzing dial up tones. Today’s landscape of communication has transformed radically, to the extent where I sometimes worry whether we are now overcommunicating and overcomplicating with less precious in-person face time.”

Despite facing geopolitical events like 9/11 and the 2008 financial crash, and more recently, the global pandemic not to mention the tragedy of Grenfell, Halspan’s adaptability and resilience have remained steadfast. “We retain the energy and agility of a start-up and my enthusiasm even after 25 years+ at the helm is unwavering.” states John.

Mission: enhancing fire safety

From the outset, Halspan’s mission was clear: to enhance fire safety standards worldwide. “By introducing pre-tested assets, we set a new benchmark for reliability and performance, earning the trust of customers and industry professionals alike. Through relentless innovation and a resolute dedication to quality, we quickly became synonymous with excellence in fire safety – a reputation we maintain today.”

John reflects: “25 years into our journey, with offices in London, Dubai and Delhi, we’re still leading with new complete solutions and services. We’re also expanding into emerging markets like India and Egypt and are embracing new sustainability initiatives to meet modern environmental certification, giving peace of mind to customers around the globe.”

“While it would be comfortable to rest on our laurels, the work continues. We’re always looking for ways to meet and exceed expectations, not to mention keep up with manifold regulatory updates and nuances.”
